Having a baby is terrifying, so many bad things can happen. One thing talked about often is SIDS. SIDS is scary and while doing my research I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry, a lot. While SIDS isn’t necessarily preventable you can do things to reduce the risk. If you want to know about those steps click here (https://www.webmd.com/parenting/sids-prevention#1). One product that really has given me peace of mind is the Owlet Sock. It is a device worn on the babies foot that measures their heart rate and oxygen level. It really helped me get a little bit more rest when my daughter was sleeping. It comes with three sock sizes so this product can really grow with your baby. If the sock detects that your babies heart rate or oxygen level has had a dramatic change an alarm will go off, alerting you to check on the baby immediately.
When talking to my pediatrician about how I thought this was a wonderful product he did say he doesn’t normally recommend them. His reasoning is that it can cause anxiety in parents and have wrong readings. To be completely honest, I didn’t care. I love the fact that there is a product on the market that will calm my nerves that isn’t in the form of a pill.
The list of things I dislike with the Owlet sock is pretty short. I don’t like the amount of time it takes to alert you. It might be less than 30 seconds but I feel that can be life or death if your baby stops breathing. I also wish the sock was machine washable. I’ll admit, there’s been a few hazy 3:00am diaper changes that went awry and my baby plopped her foot right into her dirty diaper. Hand washing a shitty sock isn’t the way I like to spend my time, but it can be avoided. That one is on me. If you’re looking for peace of mind I’d definitely check out the owlet sock and know you’re not alone with your anxiety over baby sleep or shitty sock cleaning at 3:00am.
